Hat tip to Major Dad for sharing this beautiful poem he received from his sister. Better have the tissues handy!

A Different Christmas Poem
By Michael Marks

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn’t quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

“What are you doing?” I asked without fear,
“Come in this moment, it’s freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!”

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire’s light
Then he sighed and he said “Its really all right,

I’m out here by choice. I’m here every night.”
“It’s my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I’m proud to stand here like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at ‘ Pearl on a day in December,”
Then he sighed, “That’s a Christmas ‘Gram always remembers.”
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ‘ Nam ‘,
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I’ve not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he’s sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue… an American flag.

“I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.

I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.”

“So go back inside,” he said, “harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I’ll be all right.”
“But isn’t there something I can do, at the least,
“Give you money,” I asked, “or prepare you a feast?

It seems all too little for all that you’ve done, For
being away from your wife and your son.”
Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret, “
Just tell us you love us, and never forget.

To fight for our rights back at home while we’re gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.

Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.

Cookies and Sweets!

Army Wife/Toddler Mom is looking for a few good….recipes! It’s kind of a blogger’s cookie recipe exchange and I thought it sounded like fun, so here are some of my favorite recipes, though I must admit it’s been a long while since I’ve made any cookies! The girls’ Christmas break is coming up…sounds like it might be in the cards this year! So here are some of the recipes that have been family favorites for years and years.

Kissmas Cookies“Kissmas” Cookies
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp almond extract
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup maraschino cherries (chopped)
1 egg white
1 tbls water
2 cups finely chopped walnuts
48 chocolate kisses

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream shortening, butter and sugars until fluffy. Blend in egg and almond extract. Combine dry ingredients and gradually add to the creamed mixture. Stir in chopped cherries. Roll dough into 1″ balls. Combine egg white and water. Roll dough in egg mixture and then in chopped nuts. Place on greased cookie sheets. Bake 10-12. Remove and place chocolate kiss in center of each cookie ball. Bake for one minute more. Remove and cool on wire racks. Let cookies cool until chocolate kiss is set (about 3 hours…not that they’ll last that long!)

Lemon Bars
2 cups flour
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 cup butter
4 eggs
2 cups sugar
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
2 tbls powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix flour and 1/2 cup powdered sugar in a bowl. Cut in butter using pastry blender. Pat mixture gently into 9″x13″ baking dish. Bake 15 minutes or until crust is lightly golden brown. Beat eggs, sugar and lemon juice in bowl until smooth. Pour over crust. Bake 20 minutes or until set. Cool on wire rack. Sprinkle with 2 tbls powdered sugar and cut into bars. Keep chilled, unless you’re eatin’ ‘em!

BuckeyesBuckeyes
1/2 cup creamy (or chunky if you’re a chunky fan) peanut butter
1/2 cup margarine or butter, softened
2 cups confectioners (powdered) sugar
1 package (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips
2 tsp corn oil

In medium bowl combine peanut and regular butter until creamy. Add confectioner’s sugar and stir until blended then knead until smooth. Shape into 3/4″ balls (you should be able to get 54 out of this recipe) and place on waxed paper on trays. In 1 quart sauce pan gently melt chocolate chips with corn oil until smooth. Using 2 forks (I found a fondue fork or wooden skewer works just as well) dip balls into chocolate until 3/4 covered leaving a small spot of peanut butter showing (so it looks like a buckeye). Return to trays and refrigerate. Keep in sealed container in the fridge.
Note: For remaining chocolate, dip strawberries or stir in marshmallows, nuts, et cetera and drop by spoonfuls onto waxed paper for extra sweets!

I’ve read more of the classics since being out of school than I did when I was in it, although my last English teacher in high school did interest me not only in Shakespeare, but the Canterbury Tales as well…go figure! I’m currently on a non-fiction kick reading political and military books. I will probably take a break and read some “no brainer” fiction soon although, I have so many books I want to read and not many are “no brainers!”

As you struggle and run around to trying to find the “perfect” gift, think about what’s really important. Is it the designer bag or the hottest toy? Is it the perfect diamond or the most expensive leather jacket? In a word, no. Yes, those are really nice things, but they are just that, things. In the grand scheme of life, those things don’t amount to a hill of beans.

It’s going to be a tight Christmas for us this year, so I’ve been trying to figure out how to give our family the best gifts I can without putting us in debt. “Santa” will still have some gifts for the girls (even though they ‘know’ all about Santa) but the gifts from Mom and Dad will be things that you can’t put a price on. This is something I’ve done this in the past when the girls were little and they actually loved it. They will get “coupons” redeemable for a day with me and a day with their Dad. Or maybe it’ll be a weekend without chores. Maybe we’ll make cookies or I’ll show them how to bead a pretty bracelet. Or maybe we will spend a day writing letters and putting together packages for our adopted soldiers. It doesn’t matter what the activity, it’s the being together that’s important.

We have a tendency to spoil the girls with things, just like any other parents, but we have found that the best gift we have given our girls is time. As a family, we have done whatever we can to have dinner together. A time when we can all sit down and catch up on the day’s events. It’s more difficult, but even more important now that the girls are older and have so many other activities, but we try to have dinner together as often as possible. This one activity has shown them that we are available for them. We will always been there for them, whether it’s to see their concerts and plays or just to listen. Yes, we still have times when we don’t get along, but because we have shown them throughout their lives that family and home are important, the girls always know that we are there for them…no matter what.

So, for us this year, the best gifts we will give each other are love and time.

Politics

I’m currently reading “Stand for Something: The Battle for America’s Soul” by John Kasich, former U.S. Congressman and host of Fox News’ “Heartland.” I didn’t think too much about him because his district was near Columbus, but I’m finding that he probably was one of our better politicians. He did not care what side of the aisle you were on, if you had similar ideas for improving something, he’d work with you.

Kasich refers to the state of our current political upheaval as a possible lack of leadership and that we need strong leaders who will put the country first and their party second. I’d have to agree with that. Everyone is so wrapped up in their political identity and who can hold the most power, that they are forgetting why they are in Washington and who got them there! Kasich’s idea to improve this situation is common sense really, but politicians are so busy playing their games and talking the talk, they forget to actually walk the walk.

Good politics shouldn’t be about us or them. It shouldn’t be about winning or losing. Good politics should be about doing. If you win, that’s great. If you lose, that’s okay, too, as long as you’ve worked tirelessly for your ideas and your ideals. As long as you’ve done something – because here again, the accomplishment is in the doing. It’s in the effort, the taking care. Talk to a successful businessperson and he or she will tell you their version of the same thing. They’ll tell you they’re not searching for profits, but for excellence. Build the best widget, design the best system, offer the best customer service and the profit will come. Run the tightest ship and you’re less likely to spring a leak. In politics, if you’re always searching for votes you’re a panderer. Ultimately, you get the votes because you stand for something. In business, if you’re always searching for excellence you’re an industry leader and it’s clear to all what it is you stand for: quality, achievement, value. Ultimately, you get the business because you’ve earned it.

I was raised with strong values and a good work ethic and I can’t believe I was the only one. I’m sure that there are many of us out there who were raised this way and to see our country turned upside-down by greed, narcissism and lack of morals is so disheartening. We need to go back to what’s right, to what’s solid, to what’s real. Kasich puts the qualities our politicians need and what we all should be doing in this way:

Honesty. Integrity. Personal responsibility. Faith. Humility. Accountability.
Being a good friend and neighbor.
Believing in ourselves.
Believing in something bigger than ourselves.
Leaving the world a better place for our being here.
Trusting in our fellow man.

I couldn’t agree more. “Stand for something or you’ll fall for anything.”

Thanksgiving at Home

I was going to write a Thanksgiving post about all the things I am thankful for and I might still do that, but then I received this email from one of my soldiers. I wanted to share the beautiful words he wrote in his homecoming email. I had the privilege to be given this man’s name (which I have withheld for his privacy) through Soldiers’ Angels. This is why I am so grateful for Soldiers’ Angels. To be able to support these men and women, even in a small way, as they put their lives on the line for the rest of us, is truly an honor.

Friends and family,

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for all your support this past year. Many of you supported me in many different ways. Some with letters and packages. Some by email. Most importantly, many by prayers for my family and I. I know the Lord was watching over me and protected me on many of my flights. Sometimes I knew about them by looking at my plane when we landed and I’m sure, many more times that I never knew anything was wrong. Psalm 91:5-6 says “you will not fear the terror of night or the arrow that flies by day.” That verse alone got me through many days of war.

I get to go home today, November 20, 2006. Yesterday was K’s birthday. I can’t think of a better gift for her than me being home safely. Please take time to truly thank the Lord this Thanksgiving day. In the past, I too took this day of thanksgiving as just another holiday and a day off from work. It is so much more. Give thanks to God, the one who blesses us daily in many ways, sometimes we know His presence is very near, and other times He keeps us far from harm with out us even knowing. We are very blessed in this country and too many times we take our life here in America for granted.

Hug those close to you, just because you can. Many men and women this week are far away from home and will sit in a military messhall with paper turkeys hanging from the ceiling, an attempt to make them feel at home. It will not even come close. When its time to go back to their room or tent and look at the pictures of their loved ones, it is only then the distance prevents a hug or a kiss from those they love and they will feel so alone. One of the biggest things I missed was just personal physical contact with those I love. Not being able to hug or kiss K, B or T is heart breaking. 14 months with no one to hug you and lean on you while you sit down or just walk along the road.

The next time your loved one sits down next to you. Slide closer to them not further away. Give them a hug or just a friendly touch. Hold their hand, tell them you love them – then show them.

Again thank you for all your prayers and pray for those so far away from their familes this holiday season. It really stinks being so far away from those you love on special days like Thanksgiving and Christmas. I for one, will enjoy this Thanksgiving Day more then any other.

Thank you and may God richly bless your life,

J
