I do not understand how a group who call themselves Christians can act in such a way. Phelps and his Westboro Baptist church are planning to protest at the funerals of the Amish girls who were murdered just two days ago. He claims that is it because Pennsylvania Governor, Ed Rendell, ridiculed their “church.” I do not believe that there is anything Christlike or even religious about this group. They are attention-seeking scum who only want the limelight and will do whatever reprehensible things they can to get their faces and names in the news. I even hestiated writing this post because I didn’t want to give them even this tiny bit of recognition. They are truly evil and they do not deserve the time of day.
Luckily, though, conservative radio host, Michael Gallagher, has offered the group one hour of air time if they promise not to protest at the funerals and though they supposedly have agreed to this deal under the condition that it is before the funerals, I am not holding my breath that they will follow-through with that promise.

UPDATE: Sarah of Learning As We Go has a poignant and emotional story of redemption and forgiveness. It is the story of the Amish families comforting and supporting the family of the man who murdered their children. This is an act of Christ, unlike the group who would use the deaths of these children for their own gains.

It is a very horrible thing and I don’t know how they can call themselves Christians either.
Pray for the familes of the deceased and ignore the attention craving fools.
Lady Jane, they definitely are NOT Christians. They have definitely proven that time and time again by their repulsive actions.
Oh, Anna, I do pray for those poor families. The Amish live their private lives and to have this horrific act committed in their community and then have such publicity in their faces, I truly feel for them!
Holy crap, how could anyone do that?
I don’t know, Stew…it is beyond comprehension!
This group is just horrible. I believe they are truly evil. Whenever I’ve seen that woman (Shirley Phelps-Roper) – she has crazed looking eyes and her speech is just hate filled.
Their evil words and deeds speak for themselves.
beth, I saw that woman on Fox one night a couple months ago…she is definitely evil!
Very true, Word, very true.
it is really sad ANNA…
thanks for the recent visit as well…
i completely agree with you…
You dont understand Anna because you are a compassionate soul, unlike them..who have ceased to feel much of anything.
Sorry about that, BB. I’ve been busy with kids and work and now dad in town, but I’m catching up on my blog reading today/tonight!
It is sad and I’m just glad that Mike Gallagher was able to disuade them.
They are disgusting people, Angel! They are about as Christ-like as that cold-blooded murderer!
Did you catch the show today? I heard some of it and it made me want to puke. Apparently they got more evil as the show went on. Bizarre.
No, Stew, I didn’t hear it. I didn’t really want to as I have seen that psycho woman on Fox News and that was about more then my soul could handle. They are pure evil!
Mike Gallagher did say something to the effect that they had to disinfect when those people left the station!
Anna,
Excuse my verbosity..
You said, “I do not understand how a group who call themselves Christians can act in such a way.”
1. They only “call” themselves Christians. Anyone can call himself a Christian — but what he calls himself does not make him one.
2. Anna, you said, “They have definitely proven that time and time again by their repulsive actions.” Remember, actions do not prove themselves before God to be Christians. Only the Lord and they themselves know for sure by their faith.
3. A believer can only tell another person is a believer in Christ by their testimony in words. One of these vile women (Shirley Whoositz) said that all these others (murdered babies, etc) were condemned to hell because they were not keeping God’s law. Therefore she proves right there she is preaching a false works/law message. Her message condemns her and all who believe it
Keeping God’s law will never keep her or anyone else out of hell. The law condemns but God’s Grace saves. The Bible says God’s law is simply a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. Christ’s death, burial and resurrection is the fulfillment of the law — and is available to all who make a decision to put their faith in Christ as Savior.
Romans 3:20 “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”
John 1:17 “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
Romans 3:28 “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”
These vile people do not walk, act or talk like true believers in Christ. Therefore, we assume that they are lost and need Jesus Christ as Savior. If God’s Grace in Christ can save a sinner like me, then He can save anyone… even these despicable people — if they choose to trust Christ as Savior — not depending on keeping the law for their salvation.
The law cannot save — faith in Christ alone does save.
They are blind. Pray for their salvation in Christ. Then their eyes will be opened and they can see.
Pray also for the families of the murdered children.
ExP (Jack)
Thank you, Jack, for your thoughtful and insightful comments. We can only hope and pray that the scales will fall from their eyes.
I suppose that I said I cannot believe simply because it is beyond my comprehension to act or speak in such a way.
If you go to Townhall.com, you can probably listen to the Mike Gallagher program.
Thanks, Word, but I think I’ll pass. I saw her on one of the Fox shows and she was so vile, I just don’t want to submit myself to that!
[...] Anna, over at the Blog “A Rose By Any Other Name” wrote a great insightful post on the Westboro Weirdoes and their missionary zeal of protesting at funerals. She made a legitimate statement, “I do not understand how a group who call themselves Christians can act in such a way.” [...]
Thank you so much for the link, Jack.
Good post. I do a lot of blogging on that creep. Keep the heat on Phelps, eventually the MSM will report on every Phelps “appearance.”
I understand exactly why they call themselves Christians. They are crazy, evil people with whom you cannot have a reasonable conversation. On FOX News this week, Shirley Phelps appeared on Hannity & Colmes as well as The O’Reilly Factor. I did not understand why FOX invited her on as they were only giving her a platform in which she could brainwash people with her evil ideology. Plain stupid/horrible on FOX’s part.
I don’t know, John, I kind of wish the MSM wouldn’t give them any time at all simply because it seems that’s what keeps them going! Then again, look at how quickly they dropped the protest at the Amish funerals when Mike Gallagher offered them air-time.
Carter, I saw one of the interviews with her and I’ve decided that I will simply change the channel if I ever see her face (or any of them) on the TV.
Calling themselves Christians doesn’t make them Christian. All we can do is live our lives in a Christ-like manner and pray that we have the strength to stay on that path. We can protect ourselves and those we care about from people of this ilk, but I believe these people will reap what they have sown and so far as I’ve seen, that has been hate, evil and utter intolerance.
