“If an American is to amount to anything he must rely upon himself, and not upon the State; he must take pride in his own work, instead of sitting idle to envy the luck of others. He must face life with resolute courage, win victory if he can, and accept defeat if he must, without seeking to place on his fellow man a responsibility which is not theirs.”
Theodore Roosevelt

Fantastic quote. It is too bad more people don’t believe this and follow through.
jgf, self-reliance was something which I was taught from a young age. That you must stand up and not depend on others to do things for you. Too bad that isn’t being taught so much anymore, eh?
but but but…,
Where does this leave the redistribution of wealth???
And what about the Girls Gone Wild videos??? How in the world are the VICTIMS of Katrina going to purchse GGW videos if they don’t have our money?
Stew-be-doo-be-do, you are a silly, silly man!
Yup.
But, as Mary Ann Glendon once commented about rugged individualism: these philosophers never comment about what the women and children were doing at the time…
Roosevelt took care of his wives, but too often bozos who spout this “I can take care of myself” philosophy ignore the woman cooking and cleaning and making it possible for their success.
Now there are just far too many men, women and children unwilling to take responsibility for even their own actions!
Great quote, Anna! I wish more people would listen and take it to heart!
Me too, Lady Jane, me too!
